Blakemore Freeman Fellowships

Blakemore Freeman Fellowships are awarded for one academic year (two semesters or three quarters) of advanced level language study in East or Southeast Asia. Eligible languages are Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, Khmer, Thai, and Vietnamese. The Blakemore Foundation makes grants for study only at specific language programs. Please refer to the current list of approved programs.

Blakemore Fellowships

Blakemore Fellowships are awarded for one academic year (two semesters) of advanced level level language study at the the IUP-Chinese Center at Tsinghua University in Beijing.

All fellowship programs cover tuition, and a stipend for related educational expenses, basic living costs and transportation.

Applications for grants for study starting in the 2026/2027 academic year open on July 1, 2025 with an application deadline of December 30, 2025. Grants will be awarded in February and March 2026.

Grants are highly competitive. In recent years we have only been able to fund less than 10% of applicants.

How to Apply For a Fellowship

Application forms are filled out online at our application site https://blakemorefoundation.communityforce.com.

  • The grant application period for language grants for the 2026/2027academic year will open July 1, 2025 with a submission deadline of 11 p.m. Pacific Time on December 30, 2025.

  • If you are unable to access or log on to our application site, or have problems using the application program, please email us at contactus@blakemorefoundation.org so we can assist you.

  • If you are applying from overseas, you may need to use a VPN or as a last resort, submit a paper application, which is available below.

  • And don’t forget - you must also apply to the language program you plan to attend by its own separate application deadline. We do not apply for you.

Materials Needed for Fellowship Application

To apply for a fellowship on our application portal at https://blakemorefoundation.communityforce.com you will need:

  • a list of all study-abroad language programs and summer intensive language programs you have attended for the language you wish to study

  • a list of all classes/training you have taken in your chosen language of study

  • a list of academic and professional honors you have been awarded

  • a copy in PDF format of your curriculum vitae or resume

  • a personal essay, three to four pages in length, double-spaced, in PDF format, detailing your career path and goals. Your essay should focus on:

    • What you will do with this language and how will it help you achieve your career goals

    • Why a year of advanced language study abroad is essential at this specific time

    • What steps you have taken which demonstrate your commitment to this Asian country and language

Please avoid jargon and write for a wider audience than your specific field. Our review committee members are all familiar with East and Southeast Asia and come from diverse career backgrounds including business, law, academia and beyond.

  • Two letters of recommendation from academic or professional contacts, which focus on your overall intellectual, academic, professional and personal qualities. Instructions to share with your recommenders on sending their letters to us are given in the on-line application portal.

  • Official Transcripts - Must be received no later than January 10, 2026

    • Please have official electronic transcripts from all college-level institutions which you have previously attended or are currently attending sent to us directly by the issuing institution to ContactUs@blakemorefoundation.org. If fall grades will not be available by our deadline, please send us a transcript showing work in progress so we can see what classes you are taking in fall 2025.

    • If a college does not provide e-transcripts, official paper transcripts in sealed, unopened envelopes should be mailed to Blakemore Foundation, P.O. Box 50347, Bellevue, WA 98015.

    • Have official transcripts with grades from each relevant study-abroad language program or summer intensive language program you have attended emailed to us by that school or program, if such grades do not appear on another official transcript.

    • For programs which do not issue grades (such as Critical Language Scholarships), email us a copy of your program certificate and, if applicable, OPI score.

    • Pdfs or photocopies of transcripts from institutions or programs located outside the United States will be accepted if official transcripts are not readily obtainable.
